Recently I’ve thought a lot about the incredible people I’ve encountered over the years in this business. I’ve learned so many things from each of them. As we start to approach the new year, and potentially a new start with new opportunities, I want to share with you some of those things, in hopes that you can benefit from their wisdom as I have.
I’m Johnny Mo. Let’s kick it.
When I talk with the successful people in my circles and ask them how they’ve achieved that success, 5 key elements always emerge. If one of these keys is missing, then the whole thing comes tumbling down.
The first key to success is really simple: acceptance. Acceptance is described as “the act of embracing subjective experiences, particularly distressing experiences. The idea is not merely to grudgingly tolerate negative experiences, but to embrace them fully, without defense.” Things aren’t always going to go our way. We need to be receptive and open to whatever comes our way. Acceptance is what allows us to see clearly and openly, which is critical for any entrepreneur who is trying to be successful. This also overflows into your personal life. Maybe you’ve been through something traumatic, such as divorce or the loss of a loved one. Acceptance of these difficult experiences is what ultimately allows you to break free of them.
The second key to success is consistency. Consistency is described as “acting or done in the same way over time, especially so as to be fair and accurate; unchanging in nature, standard, or effect, over time.” You’ve heard that you need to be consistent on social media, in your mailers, or in whatever type of lead generation you choose to engage in. With consistent behavior on your part, you will generate consistent results.
The third key to success is perseverance. One of my favorite sayings is “get knocked down seven, get up eight.” Perseverance is defined as “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failures, or oppositions.” We’re not usually gonna win on the first attempt. I’ve been building companies my whole life, and one thing is always certain: there will be setbacks, failures, misses- and then you need to revisit the first key to success, “acceptance”. Perseverance will be essential for you to wake up in the face of failure, rise to the occasion, and keep going at it. Consistency is the act of continuing to work at it; perseverance is GETTING UP to continue.
The fourth key to success is integrity. Integrity is defined as “the quality of moral consistency, honestly, and truthfulness with oneself and others.” Let’s face it, you know when you’re dealing with a crooked snake, your instincts tell you that. When you stay in integrity, people want to be around you. You are doing the right thing for the right reasons. You are looking out for the greater good, not just being selfish. This draws people to you, which will only help you to grow.
The fifth key to success is so vital, and yet so often overlooked: accountability. Accountability is defined as “the fact or condition of being responsible.” If you’re self-employed, who is holding you accountable? I teach the UPAD principles of success, which are Understand, Plan, Action, and Discipline. Those four principles create accountability. Who is holding you accountable? Do you check in with yourself and your goals on a regular basis? Do you have employees or are holding them accountable? A broker or coach? Make sure you put something in place for the accountability piece. You’ll thank yourself.
If you follow these 5 keys, you will be successful too. Have patience, it takes time. But you’ll get there.
